MAPR Thesis Support

Graduate Thesis Supplement

Depending on funding availability, MAPR Thesis Supplements from the Department of Psychology will be awarded to support graduate thesis research. For students in the 2018 cohort and beyond, students must first apply for the Graduate College Thesis Supplement Fellowship and receive notification of that award prior to applying for the MAPR Thesis Supplement. If you are not awarded funding by the Graduate College or your project requires additional funding, then you may apply for the MAPR Thesis Supplement. (Students can apply for Department funding without first applying for Graduate College funding only in extraordinary circumstances. Please contact the Graduate Program Director for questions.) The Graduate College Thesis Supplement Fellowship Application is available here

Please note that the Graduate College Thesis Supplement Fellowship has two application periods: one for funding in the subsequent fall semester starting April 15-June 30 and one for funding in the subsequent spring semester from September 15-November 15. In order to apply for the Graduate College funding, your thesis proposal must be formally approved the Graduate College a minimum of one business day prior to the close of the application period.

For the MAPR Thesis Supplements, graduate student thesis research will be supported through the awarding of grant funding. Limited funding is available for such awards, and all completed and eligible applications will be considered on a competitive basis. A maximum of $1000 in funding may be awarded. Given the limited funding pool, applications may be partially funded.  Eligibility criteria are outlined below.

Funds will be used to purchase supplies* (e.g., software, bioassay supplies, testing forms), equipment*, travel directly related to conducting the research, advertisements for recruitment, and/or for participant payment.  Funds may not be used for conference travel, graduate or undergraduate salary, or conference-related activities. Applicants must complete the online application form (gold button on the top right of this page). Thesis mentors may be consulted to confirm they approve of the funding request. Funds will be disbursed to the faculty mentor, who will be responsible for documenting disbursement to participants or purchase of supplies and/or equipment.

Only fully completed applications will be considered for funding and accepted on a rolling basis.

Eligibility Criteria

Supplements are available to currently enrolled graduate students in the MAPR program, who have received proposal approval and expect to graduate according to the requirements of the Graduate College and the Department of Psychology. Students are eligible for the Department supplemental fund after applying for and receiving notification about the Graduate College Thesis Research Support Fellowship.

Applicants must demonstrate academic competence and maintain a semester grade point average of at least 3.3 or above.

Applicants are also required to submit a 500-word abstract describing how the supplement is necessary for the proposed research. If funds are required for participant payment, additional justification (200 words max.) and consent of the thesis supervisor are required.

The supplemental grant funding must support only the thesis work outlined in the accepted Thesis Proposal; other projects will not be funded.

Application Procedures and Deadlines

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Only fully completed applications will be considered.

Adjudication Process

Completed proposals will be evaluated by the Graduate Committee, which will consider applications as they are received. Need for funding to complete the thesis and the detailed budget will be considered in the evaluation process.
