Do you feel unproductive at times or believe you should be doing more? This presentation is focused on identifying the difference between healthy boredom and the concept of laziness. In our current fast-paced lives it is important that we don't evaluate ourselves by the completion of our task list. This discussion will help you develop a well-balanced understanding of your experience and utilize your strengths in keeping the mental engine running.

This workshop introduces participants to essential strategies for revising and editing their drafts. Participants will practice concrete skills to transform their writing, such as using a reverse outline to check for global coherence and applying the “old-new” principle to improve logical flow from sentence to sentence. The workshop will also distinguish between revision, editing, and proofreading, and help participants use that knowledge to prioritize their writing tasks.

When you write a thesis, dissertation, or academic journal article, you are addressing a small audience of academics in your field. However, academic writers sometimes need to speak to wider audiences with limited or no specialized knowledge, such as when writing proposals for funding, when creating outreach materials for the public, or when communicating with the media. During this session, you will gain practice with the following:

• analyzing your audience
• recognizing and avoiding jargon
• editing for simplicity and conciseness
• using examples and anecdotes
• writing with directness

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition in which master's students on a thesis track and Ph.D./Ed.D. students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their research and its significance. The 3MT® promotes presentation and communication skills, provides opportunities and feedback for students to work on explaining their research to a non-specialized audience, and in general helps students hone their “elevator pitch” discussions of their dissertations (especially useful for those students heading into job interviews!).

At the University Final, twelve students will compete to win top awards. These students will be announced at the end of October 2024.

Guests who attend the event can vote for their favorite competitor and help them win the People's Choice award. Refreshments and snacks will be provided, and there will be time for a Q&A with the finalists following their presentations, door prizes, and raffle prizes. Join us at the University Final and help support graduate student research!
